A pilgrimage is a holy exercise which may be undertaken by a group of people or as few as one, the aim of which is to visit and pay reverence to a sacred sight or series of sacred sights. Whilst the pilgrimage is also a physical effort, expecially in days gone by when people would walk, it is a journey made in the hope of gaining God's spiritual favours, for oneself, another person or the success of any other personal agenda. One thing is certain, to take a significant period of time away from one's usual activities to make an often arduous trek is indicative of significant inner piety, inner strength and divine inspiration.

Reference to Geoffery Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales" will provide an excellent insight into mediaeval Christian pilgrimages. In modern times, the Hajj is great example of faith in practice whereby Islamists make an annual pilgrimage to Mecca for the honour of Allah and the The Prophet, Mohammed.
