As the former capital of Normandy before it fell to the French, Rouen (with its excellent trading position and all) played an important role in the history of the region. There were therefore a number of important rulers buried within the cathedral's walls. After the cathedral's fire in 1200, King John gave large sums of money to rebuild the cathedral due in large part to the many relatives he had buried there. Among the most famous burials is the heart of William the Conqueror.
