One view:There's a difference between 'growth' as a tree; and the 'fruitage' of a tree.

The tree itself, it keeps growing lifelong. -- But the fruit from that tree; its maturity is achievable.

When a tree produces fruit, it is at first 'im-mature'. It has not reached ripeness yet. But in short time, it does become mature; and is identifiable and eatable.

Likewise with a Christian. Yes, at first, in the early stages, there are immature decisions made; perhaps based more on 'self' than on 'selflessness'. But in time; as a person acquires experienc, and acquires the various aspects of the fruitage of the spirit - - he can achieve spiritual maturity, enough for others to nurish themselves from them.

One might still make mistakes; but when one starts to 'become rotten' as a Christian, then they might become worthless, and need to be removed from the barrel. They did not become 'im-mature', they become 'rotten'.

Additional Answer:

The Apostle Paul uses this analogy of the need for Christians to continue growing:

Hebrews 5:11-13New International Version (NIV) Warning Against Falling Away11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. 12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.
