There are 3 factors which contribute to the formula of deciding what is compulsory in Islam and what isn't.
1 is the Quran, the word of God
2 is the Hadiths, the oral transmissions of people which are about the Prophet, what he said and what he did
3. Is the school of thought regarding what is compulsory and what is not.
Some people use only 1 of the above factors to consider their decicions. Others use two, others use all three. I use only one: Gods word. And in the Quran, it makes no mention of colour or material.
