Many others see Genesis as falling in the genre of 'theological poetry', they would say that the key to interpreting it is not so much asking:

• did it actually happened that way?
  

But rather, to ask:

• what is it telling us?

Therefore, many Christians see the point of the creation narrative not as definitive evidence of a seven day creation, but rather speaking to theological truths about creation.

For example, they might walk away with lessons such as:

• the world, humanity, sex, and work are inherently designed to be good in their original state.
  
• That gender equality is part of the original creation before the fall.
  
• That stewardship of the earth was the primary task given to humanity.
  
• That humanity has inherent dignity and worth, to be respected and valued, as created in the image of God.

In this light, the creation account has little to do with competing against science. Instead it is the foundation of a socially just moral ethic.

No. To begin with, atoms did not (and could not) form from subatomic particles until approximately 300 thousand years following the Big Bang. That definitely cuts out the "seven days" idea.

The first three verses of Genesis 1 reveals that "God made the heavens and the earth [the universe]... and sometime afterward [it doesn't say], something happened to the earththat caused it to become "without form and void"... caused the earth to become desolate, to lie waste; a vacuous undistinguishable ruin.

It doesn't say what caused it or why.

THEN, for the rest of Genesis 1, God RE-CREATED the earth in six days, preparing it to sustain man who was made on the sixth day... and set aside the seventh day for man to rest, "recharge his batteries," and "remember" creation... remember that man was created... and to remember his Creator.

The only "time frame" mentioned in this account is the six days it took to RE-create the ruined earth.

It doesn't tell us how long it took God to create the universe [of which the earth was only one planet].

Nor does it tell us how much time passed after the universe was created before the earth suffered this mysterious destruction about which few people bother to inquire.

The reader can fill in his own number for these undisclosed time frames. One guess is as good as the next.

The mere fact of the half-life of the atom reveals that matter [the universe; compacted energy in all its various forms] had a finite beginning... no new atoms are being formed today... and that it's all winding down.

The beginning of time is lost to us... as time began when the planets were first set in motion - their rotations and their orbits - however long ago that might have been.

God isn't saying.

Time is physical... measured by the movements of the planets.

The only thing God has revealed to us, is that He RE-MADE the earth in six 24-hour days, measured by the consistent rotation of the earth, which He sustains for us: "...and the evening and the morning were the first day..." (Gen.1:5).

The only thing God is telling us, is that He has set aside the unnatural time frame of the repetitious "seven-day week"... to "remind" us about "creation" and our "Creator."

He has not deemed it necessary to reveal to us how long it took Him to create the "original earth" in the beginning with the rest of the universe, before the earth was destroyed by something.

No - a better explanation is that the universe was created over 11 million years ago, and the earth some four and a half billion years ago. Life began on earth around one billion years later, and modern man appeared on the scene over two hundred thousand years ago. These are scientifically verified facts.

However, one of the creation stories in the Book of Genesis does say the world was created in six days.
