Contributors have said: The band Emmure (The Metal-Core) band is not a Christian band. - - - Actually Emmure is considered Christian. Though most of their lyrics are based in violence, they reference following Jesus and God in many songs and do follow Christian practice in their own daily lives. No one is perfect. Many Christians believe swearing, drinking, etc is absolutely OK because man lives in sin daily. Using tactics like swearing and violent lyrics, yet still referencing the belief in God, helps reach out and bridge Christian belief and atheist or agnostic Metal fans. Emmure is the French version of Immure, meaning to enclose within walls; to shut in; to imprison.
Stryper will take credit for the first 'god metal' band but there is never a clear answer to these types of questions I remember Stryper in the 80's and they could scream as good as any contemporary metal band. Another band I never saw was called Petra from around the same time.
Hatebreed

The five piece metal core band known as Caliban is from Germany. The band was formed in 1997, and in 1998 they released their first EP and began a tour all over Europe to promote their music.
"I guess you'd say we're Christian by faith, but not by genre," Black said. "We're not a praise band. In recent years, several bands with Christian roots have made mainstream play lists -- Lifehouse, Switchfoot and P.O.D. among them -- without blatant evangelical themes. Yet the musicians' personal faith remains at the core. "We can be in the secular music market but still hold true to what we believe," Black said. "At the end of the day it's who you are, not where you play." http://www.newreleasetuesday.com/artistdetail.php?artist_id=227
