Racism has been part of man from the earliest history of man. It was not "discovered", but part of man's nature.
He is considered the greatest man because he basically stopped racism.

Crooks' old man didn't like him playing with the white kids because he was wary of the potential social backlash and discrimination his son might face from the white community. It was a way to protect Crooks from the racism and prejudice that were prevalent during that time.
