Is there proof that David and Jesus came from tribe of Judah?

A:Scholars say that in the first century BCE, only priests would even know anything of their ancestors further back than their grandparents. Certainly there is nothing in The Bible that sets out to show that Mary was from the tribe of Judah. There are two gospels that feature the birth of Jesus:

Matthew's Gospel tells us that Bethlehem in Judah was the home town of Mary and Joseph. This means that Mary's ancestry could have been back through generations in Judah, but this is far from certain.

Luke's Gospel says that Nazareth in Galilee was the home town of Mary and Joseph. Since the Galileans had been forcibly converted to Judaism only a century earlier, this makes it very possible that Mary's direct ancestors were not Hebrew at all. Against this, her cousin Elisabeth lived in Judah and was married to a priest. If Elisabeth was a cousin on her father's side, it makes it somewhat more likely that both Elisabeth and Mary could have come from the line of Judah.

It is not even possible to even prove that David existed, although a tenth-century stele that mentions the "House of David" is circumstantial evidence that David had once existed, or at least that the Judahites believed he had. Beyond this, nothing is known outside the Bible about King David, but as the local king, or at least warlord, he came from the tribe of Judah.

Jesus

The Gospels of Matthew and Luke provide two genealogies, either one of which could prove that Jesus, or at least Joseph, was descended from David and the tribe of Judah. However, there are such fundamental differences between the two lists that Raymond E. Brown (An Introduction to the New Testament), says there there is little likelihood that either is strictly historical. Without these genealogies, there is no possible way to prove that Jesus came from the tribe of Judah.
