Great question. So what were the problems Brunelleshi faced during construction.

The first being the most obvious, How were they going to lift the massive weight of the stones and ribs. How to keep the dome from collapse during construction and how to this without any centering.

He used a double wall dome , the first being the thickest. He Placed 8 main ribs to span the dome and had two smaller ribs between them. The dome is an Octagon, not a circle and it rests on a "Drum' wall, not on a roof. He also used layers of sandstone and chain around the ribs to keep it from bursting out under the weight of itself.
