The Eightfold Path consists of methods and suggestions to achieve:
No one of these is aimed at ending suffering and desire, all of the suggestions work together to achieve that goal.
If the cause is desire then the end of suffering is the end of desire. The Noble Truths then suggest that following the Eightfold paths the road to ending desire.

Once he became aware of the suffering of humanity he sought first the cause and then the cure. The cause was desire and the cure was to defeat suffering by the Eightfold path .

Dukkha, or suffering to the Buddhist is extinguished by eliminating desire. It is an axiom of Buddhism that all suffering is caused by desire, hence to eliminate suffering, you only need to eliminate desire.

Buddhism states that suffering or unsatisfactoriness is the common experience with all people. In the Four Truths this is the first observation. The second seals with the cause of suffering, this is desire or wanting things to be different. The route to avoiding suffering is identified as avoiding or overcoming desire. The Fourth Truth says the actual method is to follow the Eightfold path which is a guideline to reducing pain and suffering in your life.
