Assuming that this question is in regard to racial integration primarily in the United States, religion certainly played a part. People were motivated to demand integration for many reasons; ethical, moral, humanitarian, and religious. However, religion was not unified on the subject. Though the majority of people supporting integration had religious reasons for their position, there were also those who believed (and still believe) that religion favors the separation of the races. Religion seems to have played a positive, and certainly an active part in bringing about integration, but there was a significant minority who found religious reasons for resisting integration, although this is largely seen as a distortion of religious and Biblical teaching and largely an attempt to justify the status quo.

Racial integration faced similar disagreements in other countries where the issue has been faced for similar reasons, but rarely has the struggle for racial equality been as vociferous, divisive, and violent as in the United States in the 1950s and '60s.
