Many people in the North felt that slavery was not worth fighting for. In fact, they believed the South should've just been left alone. While there were wealthy Southern sympathizers up North, most people that felt this way lived in the inner-cities. They did not care about preserving the Union because it would be their sons dying on the battlefields.
