The only people that we can know about are the saints because God has declared them, through His Vicar on earth, to be in heaven. Beyond the saints, we have no knowledge of anyone in hell or anyone else in heaven.

Actually, that is a belief held by Roman Catholics, no one else. The condition of the soul of George Washington has no relevance to your life or your spiritual development. You are responsible for the condition of your soul no one elses. You have the responsibility of practicing and developing your spiritual virtues so that when you die you will be able to function in the next world, a totally spiritual world. Those souls which are not developed enough to function will be distant from God, a condition known as Hell. Those which are developed enough to function are closer to God, the condition known as Heaven. Just as there are different forms of life and levels of functioning in the physical realm (rocks, trees, animals, humans) so too there are different levels of functioning in the next, spiritual realm.
