This is a big question. To try to put it simply- the one true God, who is indeed one God has revelaed Himself as three persons who all share the same divine nature and yet are one God. Father, Son (incarnated as Jesus Christ) and Holy Spirit. They all share the same divine qualities of being all-powerful, all-knowing, being immutable (i.e. unchangeable) perfect etc. Where they are in some sense distinct is that they perform somewhat different functions, as revealed in The Bible.
What is sometimes lost in theoretical discussions about the tri0une nature of God is that He is revealed as a personal God, who not only relates to Himself (He thus was never ever lonely and did not need man for company) but wants a personal relationship with us humans, His creatures. This is why Jesus came to restore the chasm between God and man by dieing on the cross of calvary and then sending the Holy Spirit to reveal Himself to all who seek.
