In the Buddhist Pali Tipitaka, Mahavira is referred to as Nigantha Nātaputta, one of the six heretics, who were contemporary with (i.e., living at the same time as) the Gautama Buddha and who had claimed that they themselves were the Buddhas (but actually they were not) before Prince Siddartha attained Buddhahood.
