Laws enforcing clerical celibacy start showing up between 295 and 302 A.D. There were problems with observance during the medieval period, but they were never permitted to marry. There are rites of the church (of which the Latin rite is only one, albeit the largest) in which we ordain married men, but one takes a vow of celibacy upon ordination and no one may marry after ordination.
