Roman religion didn't exactly prescribe a code of ethics to live by, so most Romans (plebeians included) only looked to religion as a means of appeasing otherwise unconcerned or even hostile spirits and gods to secure good fortune.

In later times, Fortune developed into a force much beyond human control (that not even the gods could control) and plebeians particularly resigned themselves to this view. More educated Romans sought ethics and morals (which Roman religion lacked) in Philosophy.
