One unique tradition in Mormon Christmas celebrations is the performance of a nativity play called "The Nativity Story." Another tradition is the singing of hymns and carols that focus on the birth of Jesus Christ. Mormons also emphasize service and giving to others during the holiday season. Additionally, many Mormon families have a special Christmas Eve dinner and attend a worship service on Christmas Day.
There are two figures associated with Christmas. Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus on Christmas. Since the Christian celebration was laid over an ancient pagan time of celebration the name "Christmas" has survived as an identifier for that day although pagan traditions dominate the holiday. The most well known secular Christmas figure is, of course, Santa Claus who is a conglomeration of gift giving father figures from many different ancient cultural traditions.
