Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) may do whatever they please. However, they risk loosing their membership in the church if they commit a serious sin such as murder, rape, abuse, or adultry.

Mormons believe that God has given us commandments to help us live happy and productive lives. These commandments include the 10 Commandments given to Moses (Keep the Sabbath day holy, be honest, do not covet, do not kill, do not steal, etc) as well as living a healthy lifestyle (specifically avoiding alcohol, tobacco, coffee, and drugs), dressing modestly, and living traditional Biblical values and morals. Mormons are expected to live up to these standards, however, they are not "banned" from doing things that are contrary to God's commandments, and punishments are rarely given except in the case of serious sins, as I said earlier.

One of the central beliefs of Mormonism is that agency (the ability to choose and act for oneself) is a gift from God. While Mormons may do whatever they want, they understand that our choices and actions have consequences both on earth and eternally, and that the commandments that God gives us are for our own good.

To learn more about Mormon beliefs about God's commandments and about God's gift of agency, see the "Related Links" below.

Is polygamy practiced today by Mormons banned from the Mormon Church?

Polygamy was banned from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) over 120 years ago in 1890. Those practicing polygamy today are not really Mormons, because they have been excommunicated (kicked out) of the Church. Anyone found practicing polygamy is immediately excommunicated.
