The First Quest was an attempt to understand Jesus in more natural terms due the heritage of the Enlightenment. The result was a Jesus pictured as a great human example, the type found in "In His Steps," by Charles Sheldon.

The Second Quest resulted from the inability of scholars to separate the classical liberal Jesus of the First Quest from the elements of prophecy, miracle, and the coming of a future heavenly kingdom that were so much a part of His teachings. Beginning shortly following the Second World War, this group accepted the more futuristic and miraculous teachings of Christ, but interpreted them existentially. Instead of the Kingdom of Heaven becoming an ideal society, it represented each person's struggle for personal fulfillment.

The Third Quest is actually a complex of groups dating from the 1950s and utilizing differing paradigms to understand Jesus. Examples would be the psychological approach of Krister Stendhal, the sociological analysis of E.P. Sanders, the historical emphasis upon Jewish backgrounds of David Flusser and Brad Young and the more controversial "Jesus Seminar" approach exemplified by Robert Funk and Dominic Crosson.

What is Albert Schweitzer's argument in Quest for the historical Jesus?

The following explanation is taken from an article written by H. Alan Brehm. I quote him verbatim and take none of these assertions as my own; I only offer them as a succinct explanation of Schweitzer's argument from Brehm's perspective:"In contrast to the disregard for Jesus' historical context by the main stream of the "Quest of the Historical Jesus," Albert Schweitzer sought to assert an understanding of Jesus based on Jewish apocalyptic eschatology, following the lead of Johannes Weiss. Schweitzer argued that Jesus expected the "Son of Man" to appear during his ministry and establish God's Kingdom on earth. When that did not happen, Jesus determined to provoke the Jewish authorities to execute him, believing that his death would trigger the events leading to God's intervention in history. Although Jesus died sadly mistaken in his apocalyptic notions, his death has impact upon modern Christians by inspiring them to emulate his sacrifice. Thus Schweitzer brought the original "Quest of the Historical Jesus" to a close by moving scholarship closer to an understanding of Jesus in his own cultural milieu, while simultaneously undercutting any substantial relevance of his ministry and message for the modern world" (6).Work CitedBrehm, H. What is the truth about the real Jesus?

Millions of Christians will say that the truth about Jesus is to be found in the gospels. On the other hand, Jews will generally say that Jesus was just a wandering preacher, while Muslims hold a somewhat confused position in which Jesus was not the son of God but somehow had divine assistance. The truth about Jesus may never be known, but the quest for the 'historical Jesus' is a significant study among New Testament scholars at the present time. There may be an approaching consensus that little or nothing that we thought we knew about Jesus is actually true.
