A Deacon's wife role in the church is light in comparison to her husband's role. The women do participate in Communion and Baptism. It is the women who set up the trays with the Grape Juice and crackers. Maintain the robe during baptism etc. A deacon's wife is supposed to encourage their husbands by keeping them lifted in prayer, and help them with their duties. As women, we have to be spiritually equipped to minister and pray for others. There are some things that a deacon may have the wife do, such as minister to other women. Basically, be one who encourages others to grow in the Word of God. Sometimes God may call on you to enter a spiritual mother role with a young lady, or you may need to physically step in and give a helping hand. But mainly, be in constant prayer of your husband because you are his "help mate". Stay in constant fellowship with other wives and learn from each other. Be a mentor to someone so that they can become spiritually mature and teach others. (Titus 2:3-5)
No, there are no women deacons in a Baptist church, deacons must be the husband of one wife.1 Timothy 3:12 (KJV) Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
Speaking for Southern Baptist churches... The Southern Baptist Convention has instituted in The Baptist Faith & Message that all leaders of the church (pastors, deacons, etc.) shall be the husband of one wife as quoted in 1 Timothy 3. That is one of the many differences between Baptists & Mormons/Church of Latter Day Saints. == 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach... 12Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
There are only deacons mentioned in the Bible. The word "deaconess" is not in the Bible. Also, a "deacon" is a man. However, to answer the question, "deaconess' is a word which has largely gone out of style, but used to be the equivalent of a female chaplain in schools and some church groups. The duties vary greatly, according to the church (or school) using the term, but generally involve relationship counselling and spiritual guidance for others.
