Two important challenges that clearly and publicly confront Pope Francis are:
1. systemic corruption and financial malpractice;
2. child sex abuse.
These are problems of quite long standing, and it is good to see that Pope Francis is dealing decisively with at least the first of these. In July 2013, he removed the Vatican Bank's director and deputy director as part of a drive to clean up allegations of corruption and money-laundering at the bank. In January 2014, the pope replaced four cardinals on the bank's supervisory board. Then in March 2014 he appointed Cardinal Pell to a new role to audit and supervise the financial affairs of the Vatican. So far there have been no confiscations, indictments or prosecutions, so we must wait to see how serious the Church is about removing corruption within the Vatican.
