Three gifts are explicitly identified in Matthew: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Many different theories of the meaning and symbolism of the gifts have been advanced; while gold is fairly obviously explained, frankincense, and particularly myrrh, are much more obscure. They generally break down into two groups: * That they are all ordinary gifts for a king - myrrh being commonly used as an anointing oil, frankincense as a perfume, and gold as a valuable. * That they are prophetic - gold as a symbol of kingship on earth, frankincense (an incense) as a symbol of priestship, and myrrh (an embalming oil) as a symbol of death. Sometimes this is described more generally as gold symbolizing virtue, frankincense symbolizing prayer, and myrrh symbolizing suffering.

It says that he received 3 types of gifts - gold, frankincense, and myrrh. He may have received many containers of each, because the scriptures do not specifically say. The scriptures also do not explicitly say how many kings/magi there were, just the number of types of gifts, so it is assumed that since there were 3 gifts, there were 3 Magi.
