1 Timothy, 2 Timothy and Titus are known as the "pastoral letters" because they offer 'pastoral' instructions for the bishops who were beginning to be appointed as overseers around the turn of the second century.
As the leaders of the Church, the bishops would have to be upstanding citizens and "well thought of by outsiders, and the epistles cautioned that the congregations should learn to obey their instructions. 'Paul' also spelt out the requirement for deacons as leaders within the Christian community.
And just as the author of the pastorals defined the leadership roles of the bishops and deacons, he said that husbands were the leaders for their wives, who were commanded to obey their husbands. In return, husbands and masters were to treat their wives, children and slaves kindly.
