The three different political parties in Jesus' time were the Pharisees, the Scribes, and the Sadducees. The Sadducees were less aggressive to Jesus until later on. The Pharisees, however, were more aggressive.
Roman Empire.
Rome ruled the Holy Land during Jesus' time so anyone in power--political and religious had to cooperate with Rome. Messianic religions which called for the overthrow of Rome's rule were suppressed and/or controlled.
Palestine was under Roman control in Jesus time, although this was resented. There were always small groups who were rising up. Barrabas was an example of this since he had been involved in an insurrection and was in prison because he had murdered someone in the uprising.
Herod, a leader in the time of Jesus. he had ruled Palestine up to when he died. He was kind of a self centered leader who wanted everything for himself.
The pharisees (who were the leaders of the jewish religion at the time) felt that their authority and reputation was being threatened because Jesus told people to follow different laws and broke some of the Pharisee's laws.
