It is not 'different purposes' but rather different levels of human ability to comprehend the meaning of the Scripture. We each have individual capabilities to discern meaning and have different educational and social upbringing allowing for shades of discernment to a particular verse or story. A good rule of thumb is to always read a passage in its full context and them let The Bible interpret itself and not someone else at first. Then you can compare for yourself which makes most sense to you and you can prove it to yourself.
