What are the duties for a bar mitzvah?

During the actual service, the parents participate in certain prayers, and in the ritual of passing the Torah from generation to generation (grandparents to parents to bar/bat mitzvah). In addition, the parents make a "speech" to the bar/bat mitzvah telling them how the event strengthens the family and how proud they are, etc.

A boy becomes bar mitzvah when he turns age 13. That means that he is personally responsible for his actions, while as a child, his parents were responsible for his actions. Among the adult responsibilities, the actual bar mitzvah celebration typically revolves around the the first time the boy is counted toward a minyan (the quorum of adult Jews required to hold a full communal prayer service), the first time the boy is called up for a portion of the Torah reading, and the first time the boy wears a tallit or (if celebrated on a weekday) tefillin at a service. If the boy is able, the boy typically does some or all of the Torah reading and leads some or all of the service.
