What are the four things one does to become a Mormon?

To become a Mormon, all you need to do is hear the Church's 'basic discussions'.

These are normally taught by missionaries of the Church.

If you like what you hear and believe you are gaining a 'testimony' of the message taught, you may ask to be baptized a member of the Church. Baptism is based on your personal readiness and when you feel comfortable making the commitment. The process can take as little as a few weeks or even several years if you are very unsure about your bel;ief for some time. Our experience is that most take only weeks once they are keen to join; it is entirely up to you.

The only prerequisite you should set for yourself should basically hinge around a personal desire to want to become like Jesus ... and that is the simple essence.

If you develop faith in Jesus Christ and want to change your life accordingly, you are ready to join the Church.

The long answer:

To convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) you will first need to take the introductory lessons from the local missionaries. There are four lessons which cover the most basic beliefs of the Church, but if you have additional questions, concerns, or areas of interest, you can have lessons with the missionaries as many times as you would like. Those taking lessons from the missionaries are called "investigators", and they are encouraged to attend worship services and congregation activities as well as study scripture and church-published materials while they are investigating Mormonism. For some, this 'investigation' process takes only weeks, while others study with the missionaries for years. Most converts spend a few months 'investigating' before deciding to convert.

If you believe all the missionaries have taught you, feel that you have had any questions or concerns answered, and would like to convert, you will begin the baptism process. In order to qualify for baptism you must meet certain requirements:

--you must not live with anyone of the opposite gender that is not a legal spouse or relative. (no cohabiting couples or co-ed roommates)

--you must not be in a sexual relationship with anyone that is not your legal spouse.

--you must be avoiding all alcohol, drugs, tobacco, coffee, tea, and pornography [the church provides an addiction recovery program for those who may need it]

--you must have repented of any past sins

--if under 18, you must have parent's permission. If married, you must have your spouse's permission.

--you must have attended several worship services and received the introductory lessons from the missionaries.

Once you meet these qualifications, a baptism interview will be scheduled. During this interview you will meet with a missionary and/or a congregational leader, who will ask if you have met the above requirements. They will then ask you the following questions:

1. Do you believe that God is our Eternal Father? Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the Savior and Redeemer of the world?

2. Do you believe the Church and gospel of Jesus Christ have been restored through theProphet Joseph Smith? Do you believe that the current Church President is a prophet of God? What does this mean to you?

3. What does it mean to you to repent? Do you feel that you have repented of your pasttransgressions?

4. Have you ever committed a serious crime? If so, are you now on probation or parole? Have you ever participated in an abortion? A homosexual relationship? (if yes to any of these questions, you can still be baptized, but will need to discuss the issue with your Bishop)

5. You have been taught that membership in includes living gospel standards. What do you understand of the following standards? Are you willing to obey them?

-a. The law of chastity, which prohibits any sexual relationship outside the bonds of a legal marriage between a man and a woman.

-b. The law of tithing.

-c. The Word of Wisdom (health code).

-d. The Sabbath day, including partaking of the sacrament weekly and rendering service to fellow members.

6. When you are baptized, you covenant with God that you are willing to take upon yourself the name of Christ and keep His commandments throughout your life. Are you ready to make this covenant and strive to be faithful to it?

Following the interview, a final date for your baptism will be scheduled. The missionaries will help you select someone to perform your baptism, give you some baptismal clothing, and explain to you what the service will be like. You may then invite family and friends to your baptismal service. The Sunday following your baptism, you will be introduced during the worship service as an official member of the congregation. The congregation will then vote to welcome and sustain you, and you will receive confirmation by the laying on of hands.

Once this has happened, you are officially a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints! Congratulations!

Find a church near you. The full name is "The Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints" and simply walk in. Look for the missionaries (they will be the ones in black suits with tags that say "elder so-and-so") there should be some there. If not, ask the bishop about it. He will gladly tell you about it. Missionaries will start to teach you everything you need to know about it and when you feel you are ready, they will baptise you. The four requirements to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) are:

Faith: Prospective converts need to develop faith in and knowledge of the gospel of Jesus Christ by studying the scriptures, attending church services, and participating in study sessions or discussions with the missionaries.

Repentance:Prospective converts who have developed faith in the redeeming and saving power of Jesus Christ will need to repent of their past sins. Serious sins may need to be confessed to a bishop, but most sins are repented of through prayer. They must also discontinue any lifestyle practices that are against God's commandments.

Baptism: Once a prospective convert has learned and developed faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ and then has repented and made any necessary lifestyle changes they may request to be baptized. Baptism is a symbol of an individual's new life in Christ.

-Living the Law of Chastity (not living with a member of the opposite gender that is not a legal spouse or family member, avoiding pornography and masturbation, and avoiding sexual relationships outside of a legal heterosexual marriage)

-Obeying the Ten Commandments

-Understands and is willing to live the law of tithing

-Has attended several church worship services

-Has had at least 4 lessons with the missionaries

-Parental permission if under 18, or spouse's permission if married

Once the individual feels they are prepared and ready for baptism, the final step is to have a baptismal interview. This may take place with a missionary, the local bishop, or both. The purpose of the interview is to officially declare your worthiness and conversion before the Lord's representative. Following the interview, the final details for the baptism ceremony will be planned, usually to take place within a week.

To become a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" Church), you will need to meet with local members of the Church to learn about their doctrines and beliefs, and be baptized and confirmed a member of the Church.
