First, people rarely lived in permanent structures which were not part of a city, which could be defended. That said houses (living quarters) would have been assembled from rock or large bricks or both. Roofing and floors being made of wooden structure. Those herding cattle were mobile therefore they lived in tents. Houses in cities were not a crude as people might think. People at that time had perfected many building techniques. Examples from ruins indicate flooring tile was elaborate.

Many assume simply because these folks lived thousands of years prior to our current society, they were not as intelligent, but studies find that notion to be completely untrue.
