As far as 'importance' goes; there is no such thing as major or minor prophet. They are equally important since they are appointed by God.The expression 'minor and major prophet' simply refers to the size of their writings. The books of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel are much larger writings, when compared with Joel, Jonah, Haggai, Malachi, etc. --But-- they were all equally impartant messages for the peoples at the various times those prophets existed, since they span many years.
There are a number of ways in which the Books are counted. In Judaism, Amos is one of the Twelve Minor Prophets, which collectively are counted as the thirteenth book. It is the fourth of these twelve. The books of the Jewish Tanakh (Bible) are numbered as follows: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, the Twelve Minor Prophets (Hosea, Joel, etc.), Psalms, Proverbs, Job, Song of Songs, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, Esther, Daniel, Ezra & Nehemiah, and Chronicles.

The difference between a major prophet and a minor prophet is the length of the prophecies. For instance Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel had lengthily prophecies, whereas Hosea, Amos, Joel ETC had shorter books. The content in all the prophecies were/are important but some are longer and more involved.
The Jehovah's Witnesses recognise all the prophets in the bible as being sent by God, namely those such as Moses, Elijah, Danel Jeremiah and many more. They believe Jesus was the last and the greatest prophet.
