Restrictions sounds a little harsh :) We believe we have things that we should refrain from doing because God asks us to.

Our "code of conduct" I guess you could say is called the Word of Wisdom. It was a revelation from God given in 1833, and it talks about how to keep our bodies healthy so that we can feel the Holy Spirit and keep him with us at all times.

We don't drink tea, coffee, or anything with alcohol -- really anything that contains an addictive substance like caffeine.. for some Mormons this includes energy drinks and chocolate.

We don't smoke or chew tobacco.

The Word of Wisdom however is not just a list of "don'ts." It also has verses that discuss exercise and eating fruits and vegetables and getting enough sleep.

These are things we try not to do, but are not part of the Word of Wisdom...

We don't have premarital sex.

We try not to swear.

We believe that if we do these things we will gain spiritual and physical blessings.

Doctrine and Covenants 89:18-20

"18. And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones; 19. And shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures; 20. And shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint."

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) place a strong emphasis on agency - one's ability to choose for themselves. There are guidelines that Mormons are expected to follow, but adherence to these guidelines is the responsibility of the individual. There are only a handful of things that warrent any form of official church discipline.

Things that may result in being excommunicated from the Mormon church are murder, incest, rape, open apostasy, or abuse. Things that may result in someone being 'disfellowshipped' (put on temporary probation) are any of the above, adultry, production or sale of illegal drugs, abortion, or homosexual relationships. Those who are excommunicated or disfellowshipped are welcome to continue attending worship services with their congregation, but are not eligible to hold leadership or teaching positions within the congregation.

Other guidelines of the Church are based on the interpretation of the individual. Adherence is required for certain leadership positions in the church, but how someone interprets each guideline in their personal life is up to them. These guidelines are:

*Following the 'Word of Wisdom' health code. Generally, no alcohol, coffee, drugs, or tobacco. Some interpret this more strictly and avoid sodas and Hot Chocolate, others interpret it more liberally and may even have a glass of wine or a beer on occassion.

*Dressing modestly. Generally, do not expose the shoulders, stomach, back, or upper thigh. Again, some are very conservative and will only wear floor length skirts, others are more liberal and will wear tank tops and short shorts.

*Following the 10 Commandments and other commandments of God listed in The Bible. Those that are often emphasized are Keeping the Sabbath Day and paying Tithes. Exactly how to keep the Sabbath and what income to pay tithes on is at the discretion of the individual.
