Other bishops were remarkable holy men, living more like a monk or religious priest than a prince. The Bishop, himself, would have secular rights over the people in his district depending on how the local government was set up. A lot depended on where he was, and who the local ruler was, that kind of thing. Remember there was not a lot of traveling around back then, and there was none of the modern communication that we take for granted: no telephones, no computers, no regular mail service in many areas, etc.
