In as simple terms as possible, the 10 Words (In Hebrew they are not in command form as much as they are statements of fact) define what God considers to be proper behavior when it comes to our dealings with Him and with those around us. It is believed that the 10 Words sum up all 613 +/- commands found in the Tanach (OT) just as the "Big Two" from the NT sum up the 10. For example, if we love God we will not take His name in vain, create idols, we will serve Him only, and rest on the day he rested. If we love neighbor we will not kill him, steal from him, take his wife, bear false witness against him, or covet his belongings. So the commands/Words are simply God's direction/instruction for us to follow.
