It was Ishmael who was sent out into the desert with his mother Hagar, but they were not being sent out to die.

They were being exiled at the time. Ishmael would have been in his late teens.

They did fall on hard times on their journey when God provided them with water. Hagar and her son lived a nomadic life.

Ishmael later had 12 sons and one of his daughters married Esau.

Later in life, Ishmael assisted his brother Isaac when they buried their father together.

Ishmael lived to be 137 years old.
