Man sinned in the garden of Eden, (genesis 3) and were punished by God saying that they would die. Well the death He is referring to is a spiritual death, not a physical death. Yes they would eventually physically die, but they would die in the fact that they would be eternally seperated from God in hell. God had compassion and mercy on mankind, seeing that we were wallowing in our own sin with no way out on our own and sent His one and only son, Jesus Christ to be the atonement for our sins. But it doesn't stop there, when Jesus died we didn't just automatically become saved, we must have a heart change, realizing we have sinned and that we are sinners and that we need radical forgiveness and change. Our sins were laid on Him so that His blood would cover our sins and we would be released from the slavery of sin. It's telling Jesus, you are the ruler of my life know, the Holy Spirit has moved me and I feel guilty for all the things I have done and I am ready to start over. It's a spiritual rebirth.
