Ethics and Religion are synonymous for some people. In all organized religions a code of ethics is used to outline/define a said religion.

Ethics are also formed and followed in the complete absence of religion. Modern research is beginning to reveal that ethical behavior is inborn. Ethics are of benefit to humanity and therefore there will always be ethical individuals who care about what's good for everyone just as there will always be self-centered individuals both in and out of churches.
Ethics came first.

In Genesis 2:15-17 it says: "And God proceeded to take the man and settle him in the garden of Eden to cultivate it and to take care of it. And God also laid this command upon the man: "From every tree of the garden you may eat to satisfaction. But as for the tree of the knowledge of good and bad you must not eat from it, for in the day you eat from it you will positively die."
In the scriptures quoted above we have God (the creator) "commanding" the man Adam (the creation). In other words, the establishment of the first religion and the laws put in place to govern it. With religion thus established, it would then be up to Adam to determine whether he would adhere to what God had deemed "ethical"--eat from all the trees with the acception of the one designated as off limits. Or would he do what was considered by his creator to be, "unethical"--against the religious statutes required for acceptable worship--eat from the forbidden tree. So there it is again! Religion-"First"...unethical eating of forbidden fruit- "Second"!
It was Hinduism that came first.

Religion was one of the main human society sectors that revolutionized the idea of 'ethics'. Religion tells you to be a good person, to love your enemies, to help those who need help. The notion of 'ethics' may be a universal idea lying in every human, but religion is what helped it come to life.
