According to Genesis Chapter 42, the Israelites left their land of Canaan for Mitsraim* because of famine in the entire area of the southeastern Mediterranean. The event most likely took place in the closing years of the 18th century B.C.E.** At that time, the Israelites were led by Jacob, who was the father of Joseph and his eleven brothers; the son of Isaac and Rebecca; and the grandson of Abraham and Sarah. The decision to leave was based on the news that the ancient Egyptian Pharaoh had approved the storehousing of grain to be sold to the starving peoples within his borders and beyond.
The Pharaoh's foresightedness was based on the interpretive skills of Jacob's son Joseph. The Pharaoh had dreamed of seven fat cows emerging from the Nile, only to be eaten by seven lean cows. Joseph interpreted the dream as a warning of seven years of plenty to be followed by seven years of misery. Fortunately, the Pharaoh decided to listen to the young, prescient Joseph.

They left Israel to go to Egypt. They left Egypt to return to Israel. They left Israel to go to Babylon. They left Babylon to return to Israel. They left Israel and scattered among the entire world. Starting in the 19th Century, many have returned to Israel. 7 million Jews live there today.

Egypt was not at war with Israel (in a de facto sense) in 1966. Egypt was at war with Israel de jure because it did not acknowledge its Right to Exist. Egypt was preparing to invade Israel in late 1966 and early 1967. It is very likely that Egypt would have invaded in late 1967, if Israel did not launch a preventative strike to cripple the Egyptian Air Force, beginning the Six Day War.
There is currently no war in progress involving Israel and the inhabitants of Gaza.
Egypt and other countries declared war against Israel, which was made mostly of Jews, so, YES, but Israel did not declare war on them.
The Hebrews never left. They are still here today, and they are now called "Jews". Most were expelled from Israel in the year 70, but in 1948 they re-established the state of Israel.

First, they went from Canaan down to Egypt, then they went from Egypt back up to Canaan, later called Israel. They went from there into captivity into Babylon (not of their own choosing) then they went back to Israel.
Children in Israel typically attend school for about 200 days a year. This includes both primary and secondary education levels.
If you'res asking "where" they went, it was to Egypt. If you're asking "why" it was because famine causes starvation.
