Hari Raya Nyepi or Seclusion Day is the Balinese New Year and it is considered one of the most auspicious dates on the local calendar. This year it falls on Friday, 23 March 2012 following the dark moon of the spring equinox. During Nyepi the entire island literally comes to a standstill for a 24 hour period and no form of activity is permitted.

In the days leading up to Nyepi a series of symbolic rituals are carried out including a purifying ceremony where sacred temple objects are carried in a procession to the sea. There is also a lively street parade of giant monster effigies called ogoh-ogoh on the eve of this traditional holiday.

The underlying philosophy of Nyepi is to appease evil spirits and cleanse the island and its inhabitants from all impurities or disturbing influences that may have accumulated. It is a time for solitude and personal reflection. Out of respect for this cultural event, you must remain within the confines of the resort until it passes.
