One of the twelve men appointed as Jesus' first disciples, the apostle Simon Peter was a key figure in the expansion of Christianity. Early on, he worked to establish the church at Jerusalem and possible Antioch. In Jerusalem, Peter effected miraculous healings and preached a powerful sermon on Pentecost that led to the conversion of some 3,000 souls; soon after, another of his sermons brought 5,000 into the faith (see Acts 2-4). Perhaps Peter's most important role involved initiating the spread of Christianity to the Gentile nations. Chapter 10 of the Acts of the Apostles records how the gospel first penetrated into Gentile regions through Peter's ministry to the centurion, Cornelius. Peter went on to preach among and encourage Christian churches, and he wrote two epistles (1 and 2 Peter) to strengthen believers in scattered Christian communities in Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia -- provinces of Asia Minor (1 Pet. 1:1). Paul later refers to Peter as a "pillar" of the church (Galatians 2:9). Next to the Apostle Paul, he was one of the most prominent early exponents of Christianity.
