To stay out of purgatory, Catholics paid an "indulgence".
Indulgences reduced time in Purgatory for sins that are already forgiven, they didn't necessarily keep you completely out of Purgatory. Also, the giving of money [meant as alms for the poor, but at one point was taken by the clergy (even then it wasn't an approved practice and was considered Simony)] to receive an Indulgence was stopped by Pope Pius V in 1567.
Catholic Rent was when you had to pay to go to mass or be a Catholic. People had to pay a penny
The practice of paying to the church to release souls from purgatory, known as indulgences, was historically a controversial aspect of Catholic teaching, particularly during the Middle Ages. The Catholic Church no longer endorses the sale of indulgences, emphasizing that salvation and the alleviation of suffering in purgatory come through faith, repentance, and prayer rather than financial contributions. Today, Catholics may offer donations to the church, but these are intended for the support of church activities and not for the purpose of reducing time in purgatory.

There were many things that he didn't like. One was that no one outside of the clergy could read the Bible. It wasn't in German. It was mostly Latin. So he translated it into German so the common people could understand it and read it by themselves. Another big thing was that the Catholic Church had indulgences. They told people that the only way for their deceased loved ones to get out of purgatory and into Heaven was to pay money. Luther said that that was wrong and the only way into Heaven was faith in Jesus Christ. These are just two but you could google it and find out many other things he didn't like about the Roman Catholic Church.
One has never had to pay money to attend a Catholic Church. The church has always operated off free will offerings.
It's a hotel for homeless people to go and live. They don't have to pay, but they can stay warm and eat and stuff
Lodging establishments are places where people can pay to stay overnight. Hotels, motels, and hostels are lodging establishments.
The main practice that Luther had issue with was that of buying people out of purgatory. Relatives of the deceased were expected to pay extra money to lessen the time a soul would spend before going to heaven.
