Daniel requested (not "refused") that he should not be compelled to eat anything, or drink wine, which would be forbidden by the Jewish laws of keeping kosher. The verse (in Daniel ch.1) does not specify further. "Bread" is mentioned (Daniel 1:8, in the Hebrew), only because it refers generically to the entire meal (Rashi commentary on Leviticus 21:17, quoting [as proof] another verse in Daniel [5:1]). Belshazzar was a 6th-century BC prince of Babylon, the son of Nabonidus and the last king of Babylon according to the Book of Daniel in the Hebrew Bible. In Daniel 5 and 8, Belshazzar is the King of Babylon before the advent of the Medes and Persians.
