Jesus will, and has, saved people from sin. But, this doesn't mean that everyone is automatically saved. Because salvation is a gift (ie. completely free and not earned), this gift needs to be received by a person before it actually applies to them. Everyone faces the choice of either accepting or rejecting the salvation Jesus offers. Ephesians 2:1-9 says: '...you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Contrary to popular opinion, sin is an innate rebellion against God; a saying 'no' to him as our Father; a refusal to live life as He created us to. Because this is an offense against an eternal God, it requires an eternal punishment - hence Hell. 'Sins' are the specific actions we take in our lives that are an outworking of this essential sinfulness. So far then, we can see that Jesus saves us from sin, sins and hell. Implied in the idea of Hell is the fact that God is rightfully angry at us because of our sin, and so we can also say that Jesus saves us from the anger, or wrath of God. The Bible teaches that Jesus actually accomplished this at the cross. So in a sense my salvation occurred when Jesus died for me. However, it is necessary for me to accept this salvation for me to actually know the forgiveness and salvation he gives. Here are some other things we are saved from as an outflow of this: Guilt - Hebrews 10:11-14 Shame - Hebrews 9:6-14 Fear of Death - Hebrews 2:14-15 (2:9) Demands of the law - Hebrews 4:9-10 Uncertainty - Hebrews 6:17-20 No identity - Hebrews 12:7-9 Dependence on things of this world - Hebrews 10:32-35 (12:28)
