Padre Pio was born on May 25, 1887 to a southern Italian farm family. He was gifted by visions from a young age. Padre Pio joined the Capuchins, an order dedicated to poverty and prayer, when Padre Pio was aged fifteen. One day, he heard a voice telling him that he would receive the wounds of Jesus Christ, just like Saint Francis of Assisi. In the year of 1918, eight years after becoming a priest, he was praying in front of a crucifix and saw a light. Soon, several friars found him laying on the floor, unconcious. He was bleeding on his hands, feet, and side. For the next fifty years, he suffered greatly, since the wounds never healed. Everyday, he lost about a cup of blood. Padre Pio's calling was to hear people's confessions, which Padre Pio did for more than ten hours each and every day. Most often, he knew what was in the people's hearts before they confessed. When Padre Pio served Mass, he often wept, seeing visions that were not in the world. Padre Pio found a hospital and started many prayer groups around the world. Padre Pio died in September 23, 1968.
