Life was probably quite hard though a simple life style - imagine life where the majority have to walk everywhere, no machines , no chemicals in your food, simple clothing woven cloth either hand sewn or woven in one piece , if you were Jewish you were governed by the Romans possibly a bit like what we are taught about life in medieval times

What kind of work did they have for Jews in Jesus' time?

Israel during Jesus' time was mostly agriculture as a county in that time had to feed the people so many were farmers growing many different crops. There was also fishing commercially as was most of Jesus' disciples. Other people would sell fish, meat, produce, grain, fruits, etc in the market places. Some people like Simon the Tanner, tanned skins for various products that were made during that time. The Apostle Paul was a tent maker. Some were shepherds and sheep breeders. Some people hired out to the farmers to reap crops, etc. There were many things a person could do to earn money.
