Life was probably quite hard though a simple life style - imagine life where the majority have to walk everywhere, no machines , no chemicals in your food, simple clothing woven cloth either hand sewn or woven in one piece , if you were Jewish you were governed by the Romans possibly a bit like what we are taught about life in medieval times

In Jesus' time their were Carpenters, shepherds, scribes, fishermen, farmers and butchers.

Most people lived by farming. Every year their lives went in the same cycle. In autumn they picked olives. In October and November 'early rain' fell after the long dry summer. From November of January the land was ploughed and crops of flax, wheat and barley were sown. From January to March people planted vegetables.

Today in our country, most farming is done by the use of machines. In Bible times farming wasn't done by sitting on a tractor, it was done by hand and sometimes with the help of a beast.

Rain or water is an essential part of successful farming. During some dry and hot times (the summer months) there is hardly any rain. During the other half of the year rain does fall and it's colder.

The parable of the sower shows a little bit of what the farming was like. All work was done by hand. They used ploughs, probably ox-drawn. The Bible mentions the plough and the ploughshare. Sowing and reaping were all done by hand, and if you read the story of Ruth you will see that people were allowed to move in to fields that had been harvested to gather what had been missed. Wheat was threshed by being trodden out, again by oxen.
