Many new skills would be taught, including Latin (both reading and writing), monastic sign language (the oldest recorded sign language in the world), musical notation and the elements of the monastic services, the daily routine in the monastery and how to interact with the older members of the community, tasks such as preparing quill pens, trimming candle and lamp wicks, remaining completely silent at certain times, how to find the various parts of the complex (cella, kitchen, infirmary, guest-house and so on), how to sit, stand and lie down in the habit without exposing the legs and much more. The extensive and detailed Regula Sancti Benedicti (Rule of St Benedict) would be read and re-read to young boys until they knew it by heart - all 73 chapters.

Young boys were generally permitted a better range of foods (including some meat), some time for play and less time in the church than older members of the community, but they were always under the strict control of the magister puerorum.
