The king was to lead them to victory against any enemy, to serve as a judge (1 Samuel 8:20; see also 1 Kings ch.3), and ideally would also be a leader in righteousness and the service of God. About one-half of the kings in the Davidic dynasty lived up to all these expectations. See also:
