* During the middle ages people wore clothing made of wool. The undergarments were often made of linen. A tunic was tied around the waist with a cloth or leather belt. Over the tunic was a scapula. A scapula was a garment consisting of a long wide piece of woollen cloth worn over the shoulders with an opening for the head. A hood was attached to the scapula. Some monks wore chains across the neck with a symbol of a cross or some rosary beads.
