That is misleading. Though vegetarianism is appreciated, many sections of the Hindu society are traditionally non-vegetarians. Beef, of course, is taboo for most hindus. This is in respect to cows which are pets and provide a whole lot of things. Milk and milk products, calves which will grow up to till the fields and carts, manure, finishing material to adobe huts, and hide for shoes.
