A.D. Means. Anno Domini. Latin for "Year of Our Lord"

It is becoming more popular to use CE (Common Era) in place of AD as the religious connotation is removed.

In either case the period is the supposed start of the Christian system of notation of years (1 to the present date is the period of time since the Christian "Jesus" birth.) Dates prior to this are labeled BC (Before Christ) or BCE (Before Common Era) and count backward to 1. There is no "0" year in either CE or BCE.
