What does Genesis chapter 6 verse 3 mean?

Genesis 6:3 says, "My spirit shall not act toward man indefinitely in that he is also flesh. Accordingly his days shall amount to a hundred and twenty years."

This scripture expresses God's resolve to end the corrupt system of things on earth. Jehovah issued a judicial decree to do so in 120 years, though Noah was not aware of that. When God made his determination concerning 120 years, there were remaining to be done. Noah and his wife had children about 20 years later. Their three children grew up and married. They had to build the ark. God's patience for 120 years allowed for those things to be accomplished and set the stage for the preservation of life, allowing eight faithful humans to be carried safely through the water.

23 So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.

I think that this verse means that because Adam and Eve sinned, God banished them to protect them from eating of the tree of life, which would result in living forever in sin.

"...to work the ground..." means that he must work to grow his own food.

"...from which he had been taken" God created Man out of dust, breathing into the nostrils, bringing life..

Great question! Gen 3:15-24 is a prophecy speaking of Satan temporarily hurting Jesus with a heel wound, meaning his death, but Jesus ultimately destroying Satan with a crushing blow to the head. Everything after that scripture just describes how live now is highlighting all the blessings the Adam and Eve lost.

Good question and often not fully understood by many.

As a dad of 4 who was with my wife in the delivering of each of them, I recall her great joy at conceiving and bearing them to term, however, I also recall her great distress and pain at delivering each. This is basically what 'multiply your sorror and your conception means and most all women would concur.

The next part is where many read over. 'your 'desire' shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.' The word desire can also mean 'usurp' or control. It indicates that the God given roles for a man and woman will be challenged by women who desire to rule over man. There are examples throughout history of this happening in localized events, however, there seems to be a growing trend in Western societies to have a more 'progressive' look at equality allowing for woman to rule over men. Sadly, even in indivual families this trend is growing with dominating wifes usurping the husbands traditional role.

So paraphrasing theses two lines we can read: 'You will now have a tendency to dominate your husband, and he will act as a tyrant over you.' The battle of the sexes began in the 60s and continues to this day in the USA. When each strives for control over the other with neither living in/for the best interest of the other as God designed (Philippians 2: 3-4), families fail and eventually so does society as the core of any society is traditional family.

The antidote is in the restoration of mutual respect and dignity through Jesus Christ as Paul was inspired to tell us in Ephesians 5: 21-33. Good reading :)

Genesis 6:3 has God saying that because of their wrongdoing, men will no longer be able to live beyond one hundred and twenty years. This may seem surprising, since we see quite a few people in the Old Testament living far beyond this age later in the Old Testament. Written by the anonymous source now known as the Yahwist, Genesis chapter 3 is the story of the Garden of Eden, and follows and rounds out the second biblical creation story.

In verses 16-17, God told Adam and Eve that they must work and that childbirth would be painful. Having eaten the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, they already knew that they must die one day, which God confirms in verse 18. In this early tradition, there is no suggestion of any other life after death, and God simply tells them they will return to the dust from which they came. The name 'Eve' comes from the Hebrew word for 'life', so Adam (Hebrew: 'man') gave the woman this name because she would be the mother of all (human) life.

When God said (verse 22) , "Behold, the man is become as one of us..." he was saying that Adam, by eating of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, had become like the gods, except that he must die one day. Knowing about death, Adam and Eve would now be tempted to eat of the second forbidden tree, the Tree of Life. It is for this reason, not as a punishment, that Adam and Eve were driven out of the Garden of Eden. God placed cherubim and a flaming sword across the path back to the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden, so that they could never go back and, eating from the Tree of Life, become immortal.
